Hockney with the Abstract Expressionists at the RA September 2016

I was lucky to catch these to gems on together In complete contrast to one another. Hockney has been around for so long he feels like the father figure of modern art and he has always been one of my heroes. He makes painting seem too easy. Close up all his brush marks are visible some rather more diluted than others, even the odd brush hair is visible on the canvas. He fools me into thinking some of the paintings are awkwardly painted but viewing again from further away it then all seems to become perfect.
Walking down the stairs feeling warm and comforted from Hockney I then enter the main RA Galleries to be completely unsettled by the scale of the Abstract Expressionists, a sight that I never thought I would see in my life time. I quickly realised the importance of their influence on all modern art. These are works that have to been seen hanging in a huge space with nothing around to distract, as minimal as possible. My only disappointment was the Rothko’s in the rondel gallery as collectively they didn’t take me as high as I had hoped and having been brought to tears before by this great artist I was surprised not to have been caught looking for longer. The reality was that the room was so crowded I couldn’t appreciated the meditative power that Rothko’s paintings have.
